How to calculate a tip

  1. Pick a tip percentage

Sit-down restaurants in the US commonly use 15–20%. Counter service or coffee might be 10% or a flat dollar amount.

  2. Choose the tip base

Multiply the tip % by either the pre-tax food subtotal or the post-tax total — many diners tip on subtotal before sales tax.

  3. Add tip to the bill

Tip amount = base × (tip % ÷ 100). Total = subtotal + tax + tip. Divide by party size for each person's share.

Frequently asked questions about this tip calculator

How do I calculate a tip?

Multiply your chosen tip percentage by the tip base (usually pre-tax subtotal or post-tax total). Example: $50 subtotal × 20% = $10 tip. Total with tip = subtotal + tax + tip.

What is a good tip percentage at a restaurant?

In the US, 15% to 20% is standard for sit-down service. 18–20% is common in higher-cost cities. Counter service or takeout might be 10% or a few dollars.

Should I tip before or after tax?

Many diners tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Some receipts calculate suggested tips on the post-tax total. Neither is legally mandated — pick the convention you prefer and use the calculator toggle to match.

How do I split a bill with tip?

Calculate total with tip, then divide by the number of people. This calculator shows subtotal, tax, tip, and total per person automatically when you enter party size.

How much is a 20% tip on $50, $60, or $100?

20% on $50 = $10 tip (total $60 before tax). 20% on $60 = $12 tip. 20% on $100 = $20 tip. Add sales tax separately if it is not in your bill amount.

What if gratuity is already on the bill?

Large parties may have auto-gratuity (often 18–20%). You do not need to tip again on top unless you want to reward exceptional service — check the printed receipt before adding more.

How much to tip for delivery vs dine-in?

Dine-in full service: 15–20%. Delivery: often $5 minimum or 15% of the order, especially in rain or long distances. Takeout pickup: 0–10% is common.

Is 15% still enough in 2026?

15% can be acceptable for adequate service in some regions, but many diners now default to 18–20% for sit-down meals. Adjust down only when service was genuinely poor — tipped wages are often below standard minimum wage.

How do I round tip amounts?

Enable round up per person to round each diner's total to the next whole dollar — handy for cash or quick Venmo splits. Tip math itself stays at cents; only the per-person total may round up.

How does this calculator handle tax?

Enter tax as its own line if it is not folded into the subtotal. Choose whether the tip % applies to subtotal only or subtotal + tax. The breakdown shows both paths clearly.

Can I export or share the split?

Yes — use CSV or PDF export after the email step (no account required). Copy the per-person total from the results panel for quick payment apps.

Does tipping count as wages for servers?

Tips are income for workers; employers must track tipped wages against minimum wage rules. For take-home pay estimates (not tip math), use our paycheck calculator.

Is this financial or tax advice?

No. This tool provides gratuity estimates for dining convenience. Tip customs, auto-gratuity policies, and tipped minimum wage rules vary by state and employer. Not tax or legal advice.

What is the tip calculator formula?

Tip = tip base × (tip % ÷ 100). Total = subtotal + tax + tip. Per person = total ÷ party size. Shortcut: multiply a tax-included bill by 1.20 for a 20% tip in one step.

What is a 20% tip on $60?

A 20% tip on $60 is $12. Total with tip (before separate sales tax) = $72. If tax is not in your $60, add tax after calculating the tip.

Is $12 a good tip on a $60 bill?

$12 on $60 equals 20% — a common gratuity for good full-service restaurant dining in the US. $9 would be 15%; $10.80 would be 18%.

What is a restaurant tip calculator?

A restaurant tip calculator estimates gratuity on a dining check, often with bill split and tax options. This page combines tip math, pre/post-tax tipping, and per-person totals in one mobile-friendly tool.
