Most US employers assume 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours per year when quoting an annual salary. Enter any pay frequency (annual, monthly, bi-weekly, semi-monthly, weekly, or daily) and get a full table of equivalents.

How to calculate hourly rate from salary
Choose salary → hourly
Select the Salary → hourly mode in the calculator above.
Enter gross amount and frequency
Type your gross pay (for example $50,000 annual or $2,000 bi-weekly) and pick the matching pay frequency.
Confirm hours per week
Default is 40 hours. Change to 37.5 for a UK-style week or part-time hours as needed.
Read the hourly result
Hourly pay = annual gross ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year). At 40×52, $50,000/year = $24.04/h.
The 2,080-hour formula
Hourly = Annual salary ÷ 2,080 when you work 40 hours per week for 52 weeks. Adjust weeks per year in advanced settings if you have unpaid time off.
Hourly to salary conversion
To convert hourly pay to annual salary, multiply your hourly rate by hours per week and weeks per year. Example: $20/h × 40 × 52 = $41,600 gross per year before taxes.
Optional overtime hours in advanced settings add gross OT pay (rate × multiplier × OT hours × weeks) — for weekly timesheets with FLSA overtime, use the time card calculator.
Bi-weekly vs semi-monthly vs monthly
| Frequency | Periods per year | Example from $52,000 annual |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly | 52 (varies) | $1,000.00 |
| Bi-weekly | 26 | $2,000.00 |
| Semi-monthly | 24 | $2,166.67 |
| Monthly | 12 | $4,333.33 |
Bi-weekly pay is every two weeks (26 paychecks). Semi-monthly is twice per calendar month (24 paychecks). The calculator shows both so you can match your employer’s schedule.
Monthly salary to hourly: multiply monthly gross × 12 for annual, then divide by hours per year. Example: $4,166.67/month × 12 = $50,000/year → $24.04/h at 2,080 hours. Weekly salary to hourly: multiply weekly gross × 52, then divide by annual hours — or enter weekly pay directly in the calculator.
Unpaid time off and weeks per year
The default 52 weeks per year assumes you work every week. If you take unpaid leave, work a school calendar, or have a seasonal shutdown, reduce weeks per year in advanced settings so hourly and annual figures reflect time you actually work.
Example: $50,000 annual salary with only 48 working weeks and 40 hours per week → 1,920 hours → about $26.04/h gross (higher hourly rate because fewer weeks are paid). Some competitors subtract holidays and vacation days from working days; this tool keeps that logic in your weeks per year input for a simpler gross conversion.
UK full-time hours (37.5 per week)
Many UK employers treat 37.5 hours per week as full-time (common in HR and public-sector roles). At 52 weeks, that is 1,950 hours per year — not 2,080 — so the same annual salary converts to a higher hourly rate than a US 40-hour convention.
Example: £50,000 or $50,000 gross per year at 37.5 × 52 → about $25.64/h. Set hours per week to 37.5 in the calculator. For UK minimum wage rules, see GOV.UK national minimum wage — this tool does not apply tax or National Insurance.

Hourly vs salaried work (overview)
Hourly employees are typically paid per hour worked and may qualify for overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Salaried employees receive a fixed gross amount per pay period; some salaried roles are exempt from overtime if they meet federal exemption tests (currently at least $684 per week or $35,568 per year on a salary basis, plus qualifying duties).
This calculator does not determine exempt vs non-exempt status, withhold taxes, or compute net paychecks. For after-tax estimates, use your payroll provider or state paycheck tools — not this gross converter.
