US sales tax calculator — by state
Free sales tax calculator and sales tax rate calculator for 50 states, DC, and Puerto Rico. Add sales tax to a pre-tax price, remove sales tax from a total (reverse sales tax calculator), or override the combined rate. Includes a 2026 state rate table, sample ZIP lookup (10001, 75201, 90210, 60601), and CSV or PDF export — no sign-up.
How to calculate sales tax
To calculate sales tax on a purchase, multiply the pre-tax price by the combined sales tax rate (state plus local). Most US checkout prices are shown before tax — unlike VAT in Europe.
Sales tax = Pre-tax price × (Combined rate ÷ 100)
Total with tax = Pre-tax price + Sales tax
Pre-tax from total = Total ÷ (1 + Combined rate ÷ 100)
Pick add or remove
Add tax when you know the shelf price. Remove tax when the receipt shows a tax-inclusive total.
Select state (or sample ZIP)
We apply a 2026 typical combined rate. Override with custom rate for your exact district.

Sales tax rate calculator (combined state + local)
A sales tax rate calculator answers: “What percentage is sales tax in my area?” Select your state above to see state rate, local rate, and combined rate side by side. Rates below are statewide averages — cities and counties can add surcharges (Chicago, Beverly Hills, Philadelphia, etc.).
Need an exact street address? Avalara and state DOR lookup tools are more precise. For quick estimates, shopping math, or invoices, our combined rate + custom override matches how most sales tax calculator by state tools work on the SERP.

Reverse sales tax calculator
A reverse sales tax calculator (remove tax mode) finds the pre-tax price when you only know the total — common for receipts, expense reports, and “how to calculate sales tax percentage from total” queries. If you paid $108.88 including 8.875% tax, pre-tax is about $100.00. Formula: Pre-tax = Total ÷ (1 + rate).

Unknown ZIPs fall back to the statewide default with a notice — not a full ZIP database yet.
Sales tax vs income tax (and IRS tools)
Sales tax is charged on retail purchases by state and local governments at checkout. Income tax is withheld from wages or paid on annual returns — different math and different tools. Google may show IRS sales tax deduction estimators for Schedule A; this page is for purchase math, not federal itemized deductions.
Related Ordio tools: income tax calculator (annual federal + state), paycheck calculator (withholding per pay period), tip calculator (gratuity on restaurant bills — tax and tip order matters for staff).
Worked examples at default combined rates
On a $100 pre-tax purchase: Oregon $0.00 tax; Florida $7.00; Illinois about $10.25 (Chicago ZIP higher); Tennessee about $9.55; Washington about $9.29. Export any scenario as CSV or PDF from the calculator.

Frequently asked questions about Tax & finance

Choose Add sales tax, enter the pre-tax amount, pick your state, and read the total with tax. Enable custom rate to type an exact percentage (e.g. 7% or 8.25%).
How do I find sales tax from a total price?
Use Remove sales tax mode. The calculator divides the total by (1 + rate) to find the pre-tax amount and tax portion — the same as a reverse sales tax calculator.

States and locals update rates periodically. We publish an as of date in the disclaimer and refresh tables annually.
Should I calculate tip before or after sales tax?
Restaurant tipping norms vary. For bill + tax + tip math, use our tip calculator, which accepts a separate tax line.
