How to count money by denomination
Sort by denomination
Group bills and coins by face value — $20s with $20s, quarters with quarters, and so on.
Count each stack
Count how many of each denomination you have. Enter whole numbers only.
Multiply and add
Subtotal per row = quantity × face value. Grand total = sum of all subtotals.
Reconcile the till (optional)
Enter opening float and expected cash from your Z-report to see deposit amount and over/short variance.
Formula: Total = Σ (quantity × face value) for each bill and coin. Example: 3 × $20 + 2 × $5 + 7 × 25¢ = $60 + $10 + $1.75 = $71.75. That is the easiest way to count money accurately: sort, count, multiply, add — the calculator handles the arithmetic.
Supported bill and coin denominations
Each currency uses common circulation denominations. Rare or withdrawn notes may not appear — enter closest face values manually if needed.
| Currency | Banknotes | Coins | Rolled (optional) |
|---|---|---|---|
| USD | $1–$100 (7 notes) | 6 coin values | Quarter, dime, nickel, penny rolls |
| EUR | €5–€500 | 8 coin values (€2 to 1¢) | — |
| GBP | £5–£50 | 8 coin values (£2 to 1p) | — |
| CAD | $5–$100 | 6 coin values | — |
| AUD | $5–$100 | 6 coin values | — |
| CHF | 10–1000 Fr | 7 coin values | — |
| INR | ₹10–₹500 | 5 coin values | — |
Switch currency in the calculator to load the matching rows. For US dollars, enable rolled coins to count bank-wrapped rolls at standard face values (for example, a quarter roll = $10).
How to count a till at close
Retail and restaurant managers use a cash register calculator workflow at end of day: count what's in the drawer, compare to the POS, and record over or short. Common questions include how do you count a till and how to calculate cash register totals — this tool covers the cash side (not card sales).
- Pull the Z-report — note expected cash sales and starting float from your POS.
- Count each denomination — enter quantities in the calculator for a live grand total.
- Enter opening float — cash left in the drawer for the next day (not part of sales).
- Enter expected cash total — from the register report (float + cash sales − payouts).
- Read variance — over means extra cash; short means missing cash. Deposit = counted total − opening float.
For labor cost context after close, see the hourly wage calculator or discount calculator for markdown math on promotions.
When to use a money counting tool
- End-of-day till close — restaurants, cafés, and retail count the drawer against the POS report.
- Tip pools and shared cash — split gratuity after counting the jar.
- Petty cash audits — verify the office cash box matches the ledger.
- Piggy banks and fundraisers — see what loose change adds up to before depositing.
- Event cash boxes — festivals and markets tally cash before bank deposit.
Operators who cash up nightly often use shift scheduling and time tracking alongside register counts — Ordio helps teams plan shifts and record hours in one place.
Online calculator vs money counting machine
Search results for money counter mix two intents: a free online calculator to total bills and coins you count by hand, and a money counting machine — hardware that scans stacks of banknotes. This page is the calculator. It does not scan, weigh, or authenticate currency.
Bill counter machines speed high-volume cash rooms; a denomination calculator is better when you already sorted cash into piles or only need a quick jar total. You can legally own a money counter machine for business use in the US — regulations target illicit activity, not legitimate retail counting. This web tool is not a substitute for compliance or anti-counterfeit devices.
Looking for a cash register calculator? Use the till panel: subtract opening float, compare to expected cash total from your Z-report, and read over/short variance.
