CTR calculator — click-through rate
This free CTR calculator works for Google Ads, Meta, display, email, and organic search reporting. Enter clicks and impressions to see click-through rate as a percentage, or switch to Solve missing metric to plan clicks, reach, or a target CTR. Optional channel benchmarks and effective CPC (when you add spend). For marketing CTR only — not chest X-ray radiology metrics or YouTube RPM workflows.
What is CTR (click-through rate)?
Click-through rate (CTR) tells you what share of impressions turned into clicks. The standard formula is CTR % = (Clicks ÷ Impressions) × 100. Marketers also write click through rate (two words) in ad dashboards — the math is the same.
An impression is usually one ad or link view (in email, it may mean a delivered send — check your platform). A click is the interaction you count in the numerator. 5% CTR equals a 0.05 ratio; label spreadsheet columns so your team does not mix formats.
CTR is not conversion rate. CTR tracks engagement at the impression; conversion rate tracks results after the click. Review both alongside CPA and ROAS when judging campaign health.
This guide covers marketing CTR, not radiology cardiothoracic ratio on chest imaging. Use the calculator above for instant results, reverse planning, and export.

How to use this CTR calculator
Choose your mode
Calculate CTR from clicks and impressions, or solve for missing clicks, impressions, or target CTR %.
Enter campaign numbers
Pull clicks and impressions from the same report, date range, and attribution settings your platform uses for CTR.
Review CTR and benchmarks
Optionally pick a channel for indicative benchmarks, add ad spend for effective CPC, and export results.
Worked example 1 (calculate): 500 clicks and 5,500 impressions → CTR = (500 ÷ 5,500) × 100 = 9.09%.
Worked example 2 (reverse): 10,000 impressions and a 5% CTR target → Clicks = 10,000 × 0.05 = 500 clicks. Use Solve missing metric and leave clicks blank.
CTR formula
Calculate CTR when you have clicks and impressions:
CTR % = (Clicks ÷ Impressions) × 100
Plan a missing number (impressions must be greater than zero; CTR % must be greater than zero when solving for impressions):
Clicks = Impressions × (CTR % ÷ 100) — you know reach and a CTR target.
Impressions = Clicks ÷ (CTR % ÷ 100) — you know how many clicks you need at a given CTR.
Example: 250 clicks at 2% CTR need 12,500 impressions (250 ÷ 0.02).
Data-quality checks
If clicks > impressions, the calculator may still return a value with a warning — standard ad reporting treats that as a tracking or definition error. Zero impressions always block division.
What is a good click-through rate?
There is no universal “good” CTR. Compare week over week on the same channel, placement, and audience. B2B campaigns often show lower CTR than broad B2C reach buys but can produce higher-quality clicks — judge CTR together with conversion rate and CPA.
| Channel | Indicative CTR range | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Google Display | 0.35–0.5% | Reach-heavy; creative and placement matter |
| Google Search | ~1.5–2% | Intent-driven; keyword match affects CTR |
| Paid social | ~0.8–1.5%+ | High variance by placement (feed vs Stories) |
| Email marketing | ~10–20% | Engaged lists; definition = clicks ÷ delivered |
| Organic search | Position-dependent | Use Search Console; rank drives CTR |
The calculator’s channel selector uses indicative midpoints for a quick health check — not a guarantee from Google, Meta, or your ESP. Refresh benchmarks in your own accounts over time.
CTR vs CPM, CPC, CPA, and ROAS
CTR is clicks ÷ impressions — how often people click after seeing your ad or link. Conversion rate is usually conversions ÷ clicks (or conversions ÷ sessions in analytics). High CTR with low conversion rate often means the ad and landing page are misaligned.
In paid media, CTR connects reach to traffic. CPM prices 1,000 impressions; CPC prices clicks in many auctions. On CPM buys, effective CPC = ad spend ÷ clicks when you enter spend in the optional funnel panel.
A simple funnel: impressions → clicks (CTR) → conversions (CPA) → revenue (ROAS). Tight B2B targeting may show modest CTR but strong conversion rate; flashy creative can inflate CTR without improving sales.
Use this calculator for engagement; use CPA and ROAS tools for downstream efficiency.
Email CTR vs open rate vs click rate
Email tools all say “CTR,” but they do not always use the same denominator. Before you calculate, check whether your export uses delivered, sent, or opens as the impression base.
| Metric | Common formula | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Open rate | Opens ÷ delivered | Subject line + inbox placement — not clicks |
| Email CTR | Unique clicks ÷ delivered | Clicks per send — matches this calculator when delivered = impressions |
| Click rate (ESP) | Clicks ÷ opens | Clicks among openers — usually a higher % than CTR |
| Total clicks | All clicks ÷ delivered | Counts repeat clicks; can inflate vs unique-click CTR |
Example: 20,000 delivered and 400 unique clicks → CTR = (400 ÷ 20,000) × 100 = 2%. If the same campaign shows 1,200 total clicks, that is a different metric — do not plug it into a unique-click CTR formula.
For SMS or push notifications, treat sends or displays as impressions only when your vendor documents them that way.
Organic search CTR (SEO)
Google Search Console reports organic CTR as clicks ÷ impressions for a query, page, or country. Higher rankings usually earn more clicks per impression, but the curve depends on brand strength, SERP layout, and whether the query is informational or transactional.
Modern SERPs add ads, shopping modules, featured snippets, and AI Overviews. Those features can raise impressions or pull clicks away from organic listings even when average position is flat. Track CTR for stable query groups over time instead of one headline percentage.
Improve titles, meta descriptions, and structured data when rankings hold steady. Keep Search Console CTR separate from paid ad CTR — definitions and surfaces differ.
CTR in Excel and Google Sheets
Build a small campaign table with columns for clicks, impressions, and CTR %. If clicks are in A2 and impressions in B2:
=IF(B2>0, (A2/B2)*100, "")
CTR as a decimal ratio in D2: =IF(B2>0, A2/B2, "") — format as percentage or multiply by 100 for a percent column.
Plan clicks from impressions (B2) and target CTR % in C2: =B2*(C2/100). Plan impressions from clicks (A2) and CTR in C2: =IF(C2>0, A2/(C2/100), "").
Copy formulas down only when each row uses the same metric definitions (unique clicks, same attribution window, same date range).
How to improve click-through rate
Raise CTR by earning more relevant clicks, not bait-and-switch traffic. Record a baseline for one ad set or email segment, change one element (headline, image, audience), and wait for enough impressions before you call a winner.
Clarify the promise in headlines and primary text — match search intent or audience pain.
Test creative (images, video hooks, CTAs) with disciplined A/B or multivariate tests.
Tighten targeting so impressions reach people likely to care (keywords, audiences, exclusions).
Align landing pages with the ad or email so clicks do not bounce immediately.
Fix tracking — consistent date ranges, attributed clicks, and impression definitions.
When a lower CTR is fine
Precise targeting sometimes reduces CTR while improving CPA and ROAS. Fewer, better-matched impressions can beat a broad audience with a catchy but irrelevant ad.
Limitations and reporting differences
Each platform defines clicks and impressions its own way — unique vs all clicks, viewable impressions, bot filtering, and email delivered vs sent. Match the export you paste into the calculator to the report you will present.
Attribution windows (for example 7-day click or 1-day view) decide which clicks belong to a campaign. Use the same date range and attribution model when comparing weeks or channels.
Channel ranges on this page are indicative industry round-ups, not promises for your vertical.
CSV/PDF export is for planning and internal models. Confirm billing and client metrics in the ad or ESP interface before you share them externally.

Frequently asked questions about this click-through rate calculator
What is CTR (click-through rate)?
Click-through rate (CTR) measures how often people click after an ad, link, or email is shown. It is expressed as a percentage: (Clicks ÷ Impressions) × 100.
The same metric may appear as a decimal click-through ratio (0.05 = 5% CTR) in spreadsheets or APIs.
What is the CTR formula?
CTR % = (Clicks ÷ Impressions) × 100, with impressions greater than zero.
Example: 50 clicks and 10,000 impressions → (50 ÷ 10,000) × 100 = 0.5% CTR.
How do I calculate CTR from clicks and impressions?
Divide clicks by impressions, then multiply by 100. Example: 125 clicks ÷ 25,000 impressions × 100 = 0.5% CTR.
Use Calculate CTR mode above to avoid manual math — you get the percentage, formula card, and optional export.
How do I calculate clicks from impressions and CTR?
Clicks = Impressions × (CTR % ÷ 100). Example: 10,000 impressions × 5% = 500 clicks.
To plan impressions instead, use Impressions = Clicks ÷ (CTR % ÷ 100) — or leave one field blank in Solve missing metric mode.
What is a good click-through rate?
A good CTR is one that improves against your own history on the same channel and placement — not a single industry number. Indicative ranges: display ~0.35–0.5%, search ~1.5–2%, engaged email often 10–20%+.
B2B programs often show lower CTR than broad B2C reach; pair CTR with conversion rate and CPA before you scale spend.
What is a good CTR for search ads vs display ads?
Search ads typically earn higher CTR than display because intent is stronger. Indicative averages: ~1.9% search vs ~0.35–0.5% display — your vertical and creative matter more than any table.
Brand search campaigns often beat non-brand; display should be judged alongside view-through conversions, not search CTR alone.
What is the difference between CTR and conversion rate?
CTR measures clicks per impression (did people click?). Conversion rate measures how many of those clicks (or sessions) completed a goal such as a purchase or signup.
Strong CTR with weak conversions usually points to a landing-page or offer problem — not just bidding. Check efficiency with our CPA calculator.
What is the difference between CTR and click rate in email?
Email CTR is typically unique clicks ÷ delivered emails. Click rate in some tools means clicks ÷ opens, which produces a higher percentage on a smaller base. Open rate is opens ÷ delivered — it does not measure clicks.
Match the denominator in your ESP export to the “impressions” you enter here (usually delivered sends).
Do you have a YouTube CTR calculator?
Use this calculator for YouTube thumbnail CTR when YouTube Studio gives you clicks and impressions for a video or channel — the formula is the same: clicks ÷ impressions × 100.
We do not ship a separate YouTube-only tool. RPM, watch time, and revenue per mille are different metrics from click-through rate.
Can CTR be over 100%?
In standard ad reporting, CTR should not exceed 100% — you cannot have more attributed clicks than counted impressions. Values above 100% usually mean duplicate clicks, mismatched dates, or mixed metric definitions.
This calculator may still compute a figure with a warning when clicks exceed impressions; treat that as a cue to audit your data source.
How do I calculate click-through rate in Excel or Google Sheets?
Put clicks in A2 and impressions in B2. CTR as a percent: =(A2/B2)*100. Safer with a zero guard: =IF(B2>0,(A2/B2)*100,"").
Target CTR in C2? Planned clicks: =B2*(C2/100). Planned impressions: =IF(C2>0,A2/(C2/100),"").
Is marketing CTR the same as radiology CTR (chest X-ray)?
No. In radiology, CTR often means cardiothoracic ratio on a chest X-ray — a clinical measurement, not ad performance.
This page and calculator are for marketing click-through rate (clicks ÷ impressions in ads, email, and search reporting).
How does CTR relate to CPM and CPC?
CPM tells you what you pay per 1,000 impressions; CTR tells you how many of those impressions become clicks. CPC is what you pay per click in many ad auctions.
On CPM buys, effective CPC = ad spend ÷ clicks. Model CPM with the CPM calculator; model CTR here.
Should I use unique or total clicks when calculating CTR?
Match the click definition in your ad or ESP report — usually unique (deduplicated) clicks for paid social and search, sometimes total clicks in email summaries.
Use one rule for the whole analysis: same click type, date range, and attribution window when you compare campaigns or weeks.
