What the current ratio measures
The current ratio (also called the working capital ratio) compares current assets to current liabilities on your balance sheet. It answers a simple liquidity question: can the business cover short-term obligations with assets expected to convert to cash within about a year?
This calculator divides your totals (or line items in Advanced) to produce the ratio, working capital in dollars, and an interpretation band with industry context — not a single “good” or “bad” label. Results are for planning and education, not financial advice.
Current ratio formula
The current ratio formula is total current assets divided by total current liabilities. A result of 2.0 is often written as 2:1 — two dollars of current assets for every dollar of current liabilities.
When your balance sheet lists detail instead of totals, you can sum components first: (Cash + receivables + inventory + prepaid + other current assets) ÷ (Payables + short-term debt + credit cards + accrued expenses). This calculator accepts either totals or line items in Advanced.

How to calculate from a balance sheet
Pull the total current assets and total current liabilities lines from your balance sheet (or sum the sub-lines if your statement shows detail). Enter both figures in the calculator — no submit button; the ratio updates as you type.
Example 1 — retail business: current assets $120,000 and current liabilities $70,000 → 120,000 ÷ 70,000 = 1.7 (1.7:1). Working capital is $50,000.
Example 2 — service business: assets $75,000 and liabilities $36,540 → ratio 2.05:1 with $38,460 working capital — a comfortable cushion for many SMBs.

What is a good current ratio?
There is no universal “perfect” ratio — industry, seasonality, and business model matter. Many small-business finance guides cite 1.5 to 3.0 as a comfortable range. Lenders frequently look for at least 1.0 to 1.2 before extending credit — but fast-turn retail can run lower with reliable cash inflows; project-based businesses may need a higher buffer until invoices are paid.
Track the ratio monthly or quarterly, not only at year-end. A single quarter below 1.0 may be acceptable if receivables timing is the cause; a sustained downward trend warrants action.

Current ratio vs quick ratio
The current ratio includes all current assets, including inventory and prepaid items. The quick ratio (acid-test ratio) removes inventory and often prepaid expenses, focusing on assets that are closest to cash: cash, marketable securities, and receivables.
Quick ratio formula: (Current Assets − Inventory) ÷ Current Liabilities — or sum quick assets directly. When inventory is slow to sell, the quick ratio can be lower than the current ratio (e.g. current ratio 1.7 vs quick ratio 0.86 when inventory is a large share of assets).

How to improve your current ratio
To raise the current ratio, increase current assets, reduce current liabilities, or both. Common actions small businesses consider:
- Speed up collections — tighten invoicing, offer early-pay discounts, or follow up on overdue accounts receivable.
- Manage inventory — reduce slow-moving stock so cash is not tied up in the warehouse.
- Refinance short-term debt — move revolving balances or maturing notes to longer-term financing when rates and covenants allow.
- Negotiate supplier terms carefully — extending payables can lift the ratio short term but may strain relationships; balance cash timing with vendor trust.
- Retain earnings or inject equity — build cash reserves instead of distributing all profit in tight periods.

Working capital is a dollar amount: Current Assets − Current Liabilities (e.g. $50,000 surplus). The current ratio is a proportion: assets divided by liabilities (e.g. 1.7:1). Both describe liquidity; the ratio scales for size, working capital shows absolute cushion.
How can I improve my current ratio?
Raise current assets (collect receivables faster, reduce excess inventory, retain cash) or lower current liabilities (pay down short-term debt, refinance to longer terms). Avoid relying only on delaying payables — sustainable improvement usually comes from operations and cash-flow discipline.

What causes a low current ratio?
Common drivers include slow collections on accounts receivable, excess inventory tied up in stock, high short-term debt or credit card balances, accrued payroll and taxes, unfavorable payment cycles, and overhead that outpaces cash inflows. A ratio below 1.0 is not always fatal — some industries with fast turnover operate below 1.0 — but sustained lows signal liquidity risk.
How often should you calculate the current ratio?
Many SMB advisors recommend calculating it monthly or at least quarterly alongside your balance sheet review. Annual-only checks can miss trends until it is late to act. Watch for sustained declines rather than one-off dips caused by timing (e.g. a large payable due next week).
