# ShiftOps E2E and UI Testing Methodology

**Last Updated:** 2025-11-20

## Overview

This document describes the comprehensive testing methodology for ShiftOps E2E flows and UI display verification. The testing infrastructure supports 200+ test cases covering all business types, data completeness levels, edge cases, and UI rendering scenarios.

## Testing Approach

### Three-Tier Testing Strategy

1. **API Testing** (Foundation)
   - Tests API endpoints directly
   - Validates response structure and data completeness
   - Measures performance and identifies issues
   - Fastest and most comprehensive coverage

2. **E2E Testing** (Integration)
   - Tests full user flow from landing page to report
   - Validates data flow through localStorage
   - Verifies loading screen and report consistency
   - Requires browser automation (planned)

3. **UI Testing** (Visual)
   - Verifies all UI sections render correctly
   - Checks data binding and fallback handling
   - Validates responsive design and accessibility
   - Can be manual or automated

## Test Infrastructure

### Test Data Generation

**File**: `scripts/test-e2e-ui/generate-test-data.php`

Generates comprehensive test data with 200+ test cases covering:
- 15+ business types (restaurant, cafe, bar, hospital, pharmacy, etc.)
- All data completeness levels (complete, partial, minimal)
- Edge cases (zero reviews, extreme values, special characters)
- Customer vs non-customer scenarios

**Categories**:
- Category A: Complete Data (40 cases)
- Category B: Partial Data (60 cases)
- Category C: Minimal Data (30 cases)
- Category D: Edge Cases (30 cases)
- Category E: Customer Boost (20 cases)
- Category F: Industry Specific (20 cases)

### API Testing

**File**: `scripts/test-e2e-ui/run-tests-api-comprehensive.php`

**Features**:
- Processes all 200+ test cases
- Captures full API responses
- Validates response structure completeness
- Checks for missing fields
- Measures response times (min, max, avg, p95, p99)
- Generates detailed test report

**Validation Checks**:
- Required fields present (`shiftops_score`, `cost_savings`, `location_analysis`, `recommendations`)
- Score ranges valid (0-100 for total, 0-20 for pillars)
- Grade assignment correct
- Team size estimates reasonable
- Recommendations have required fields (`impact`, `effort`, `success_metrics`)
- Data completeness multiplier applied correctly (0.60-1.0)
- Customer boost applied correctly (when applicable)

**Results**: Saved to `api-results-comprehensive.json`

### API Results Analysis

**File**: `scripts/test-e2e-ui/analyze-api-results.php`

**Analysis Provided**:
- Score distribution by business type
- Score distribution by data completeness
- Customer boost impact analysis
- Response time analysis
- Missing field identification
- Anomaly detection (unexpected scores, missing data)
- Pillar score analysis
- Recommendations analysis
- Cost savings analysis

**Results**: Saved to `api-analysis-report.json`

### UI Verification

**File**: `scripts/test-e2e-ui/ui-verification-checklist.md`

Comprehensive checklist covering all UI sections:
1. Score Display Section
2. Business Overview Section
3. Quick Stats Section
4. Pillars Section
5. Recommendations Section
6. Cost Savings Section
7. Competitive Positioning Section
8. Location Context Section
9. Operational Insights Section
10. General UI Elements
11. Edge Cases

### E2E Browser Testing

**Status**: Planned (infrastructure ready, automation scripts to be implemented)

**Planned Flow**:
1. Navigate to `http://localhost:8003/shiftops`
2. Inject test business data via localStorage or form submission
3. Wait for loading screen to complete
4. Capture loading screen state (score, team size, progress)
5. Wait for redirect to report page
6. Capture report page state
7. Verify all sections render correctly
8. Capture console logs and errors
9. Take screenshots for visual verification
10. Export test results

**Requirements**:
- Headless browser (Chrome/Chromium)
- Puppeteer or Selenium WebDriver
- Test data injection mechanism

## How to Run Tests

### 1. Generate Test Data

```bash
php scripts/test-e2e-ui/generate-test-data.php
```

Generates `test-data-comprehensive.json` with 200+ test cases.

### 2. Run API Tests

```bash
php scripts/test-e2e-ui/run-tests-api-comprehensive.php
```

**Prerequisites**:
- `http://localhost:8003` must be running
- Test data file must exist

**Output**:
- Console progress and summary
- `api-results-comprehensive.json` with full results

### 3. Analyze Results

```bash
php scripts/test-e2e-ui/analyze-api-results.php
```

**Prerequisites**:
- API test results file must exist

**Output**:
- Console analysis report
- `api-analysis-report.json` with detailed analysis

### 4. UI Verification

Use the checklist (`ui-verification-checklist.md`) to manually verify:
- Load report page with test data
- Check each section against checklist
- Verify data binding (scores match API response)
- Test responsive design (mobile, tablet, desktop)
- Verify accessibility (alt tags, ARIA labels, keyboard navigation)

## How to Interpret Results

### API Test Results

**Success Criteria**:
- **Success Rate**: >95% of tests should pass
- **Score Distribution**: Realistic spread (not all high/low)
- **Customer Boost**: Meaningful difference (+10-30 points average)
- **Response Times**: <2s for p95, <5s for p99
- **Missing Fields**: <5% of cases should have missing fields
- **Validation Errors**: <1% of cases should have validation errors

**Red Flags**:
- High failure rate (>10%)
- All scores in narrow range (e.g., all 70-80)
- No customer boost difference
- High response times (>5s p95)
- Many missing fields (>10%)
- Many validation errors (>5%)

### Analysis Report

**Key Metrics**:
- **Average Score**: Should be realistic (40-70 range typical)
- **Score by Type**: Different business types should show different averages
- **Score by Completeness**: More complete data should show higher scores
- **Customer Boost**: Should show +10-30 point average increase
- **Pillar Averages**: Should be balanced (not all pillars at extremes)
- **Response Times**: Should be acceptable for user experience

## Best Practices

### Test Data

- Use diverse business types
- Include all data completeness levels
- Test edge cases (zero reviews, extreme values)
- Include customer and non-customer scenarios
- Use realistic data (not all perfect or all terrible)

### API Testing

- Run tests regularly (before releases)
- Check for regressions (compare with previous runs)
- Monitor performance trends
- Investigate anomalies immediately
- Keep test data up to date

### UI Testing

- Test on multiple devices (mobile, tablet, desktop)
- Test with different browsers
- Verify accessibility (WCAG AA compliance)
- Check responsive design
- Test error states and edge cases

## Troubleshooting

### API Tests Fail

1. **Check API is running**: Ensure `http://localhost:8003` is accessible
2. **Check test data**: Verify `test-data-comprehensive.json` exists and is valid
3. **Check API endpoint**: Verify `v2/api/shiftops.php` is accessible
4. **Check timeout**: Increase timeout in test runner if needed
5. **Check logs**: Review API error logs for details

### Missing Fields Detected

1. **Review API response**: Check `api-results-comprehensive.json` for specific cases
2. **Check API code**: Verify required fields are always returned
3. **Check data completeness**: Some fields may be optional based on data availability
4. **Check validation logic**: Ensure validation is not too strict

### Performance Issues

1. **Check response times**: Review `response_time_stats` in results
2. **Optimize API**: Consider caching or optimization if times are high
3. **Check server resources**: Ensure server has adequate resources
4. **Check database**: Ensure database queries are optimized
