# Blog Migration Strategy

High-level migration strategy for moving the blog from WordPress to static pages.

## Overview

This document outlines the high-level strategy for migrating 99 blog posts from WordPress CMS to static pages in this project. **Migration completed on 2026-01-14.**

## Migration Approach

### Static Site Generation

**Approach:** Convert WordPress blog to static PHP pages

**Benefits:**

- Better performance (static files)
- Full control over structure
- Easier maintenance
- Better SEO control
- No WordPress dependencies

**Implementation:**

- Create PHP templates for blog posts
- Generate static HTML pages
- Implement category archives
- Maintain URL structure

### URL Structure

**Current:** `https://www.ordio.com/insights/{category}/{slug}/`

**Proposed:** Maintain current URL structure

**Rationale:**

- Preserve SEO value
- Avoid redirects (if possible)
- Maintain user expectations
- Simpler migration

**Alternative:** If URL structure changes, implement 301 redirects

## Migration Phases

### Phase 1: Preparation (Weeks 1-2)

**Objectives:**

- Complete content extraction
- Download all media
- Document all URLs
- Plan redirects (if needed)
- **Create WordPress master backup**

**Deliverables:**

- Complete post content (HTML/text)
- All metadata extracted
- All images downloaded
- URL mapping document
- **WordPress master backup created and validated**

**Backup Steps:**

1. Extract WordPress content: `python3 scripts/blog/extract-content.py`
2. Create master backup: `python3 scripts/blog/copy-wordpress-backup.py`
3. Validate backup: `python3 scripts/blog/validate-backup.py docs/backups/wordpress-master`
4. Document backup location and restoration procedures

### Phase 2: Content Processing (Weeks 3-4)

**Objectives:**

- Process HTML content
- Update image paths
- Update internal links
- Optimize images

**Deliverables:**

- Processed HTML content
- Optimized images (WebP)
- Updated internal links
- Clean content ready for migration

### Phase 3: Template Development (Weeks 5-6)

**Objectives:**

- Create blog post templates
- Create category archive templates
- Implement navigation
- Implement SEO elements

**Deliverables:**

- Blog post template
- Category archive template
- Navigation structure
- SEO implementation

### Phase 4: Migration Implementation (Weeks 7-8)

**Objectives:**

- Generate all static pages
- Implement meta tags
- Implement schema markup
- Generate sitemap
- Implement redirects (if needed)

**Deliverables:**

- All 99 static pages generated
- SEO elements implemented
- Sitemap generated
- Redirects implemented

### Phase 5: Link Enhancement (Weeks 9-10)

**Objectives:**

- Add missing internal links
- Improve link structure
- Add pillar page links
- Add product page links

**Deliverables:**

- 100-150 new internal links added
- Improved link structure
- Enhanced SEO

### Phase 6: Testing and Launch (Week 11)

**Objectives:**

- Test all URLs
- Test redirects
- Verify tracking
- Monitor performance
- **Verify backup system working**

**Deliverables:**

- All tests passed
- Performance verified
- Documentation updated
- Migration complete
- **Backup system validated and documented**

**Backup Verification:**

1. Create final snapshot backup
2. Test restoration from snapshot
3. Verify WordPress master backup accessible
4. Document backup procedures for ongoing use

## Content Structure

### Post Structure

**Template Structure:**

- Header (navigation)
- Post content (H1, featured image, content)
- Related posts section
- Footer

**Metadata:**

- Frontmatter or PHP variables
- Title, date, category, tags
- SEO metadata
- Schema markup

### Category Structure

**Category Archives:**

- List all posts in category
- Pagination (if needed)
- Category description
- Navigation

**URLs:**

- Maintain `/insights/{category}/` structure
- Or redirect to new structure

## SEO Strategy

### Meta Tags

**Implementation:**

- Meta titles (optimized)
- Meta descriptions (optimized)
- Open Graph tags
- Twitter Card tags

**Enhancement:**

- Improve meta tags during migration
- Add missing meta tags
- Optimize for keywords

### Schema Markup

**Implementation:**

- Article schema (all posts)
- BreadcrumbList schema (all posts)
- Organization schema (site-wide)
- Person schema (authors)

**Enhancement:**

- Add more schema types
- Improve schema structure
- Enhance SEO

### Sitemap

**Implementation:**

- Generate XML sitemap
- Include all blog posts
- Update regularly
- Submit to search engines

## Internal Linking Strategy

### Existing Links

**Preservation:**

- Preserve all 9,393 existing links
- Update broken links
- Update image paths
- Maintain link structure

### New Links

**Addition:**

- Add 40-60 pillar page links
- Add 30-50 product page links
- Add 15-25 template page links
- Add 10-15 comparison page links
- Add 10-15 industry page links

**Strategy:**

- Contextual placement
- Descriptive anchor text
- Natural integration
- Strategic placement

## Redirect Strategy

### URL Preservation

**Primary Strategy:** Maintain current URLs

**If URL Structure Changes:**

- Implement 301 redirects
- Create redirect mapping
- Test all redirects
- Monitor redirect performance

### Redirect Implementation

**Method:**

- Server-level redirects (.htaccess or nginx)
- Or PHP redirects
- 301 permanent redirects

**Testing:**

- Test all redirects
- Verify SEO value preserved
- Monitor redirect performance

## Performance Optimization

### Image Optimization

**Strategy:**

- Convert all images to WebP
- Optimize file sizes
- Implement lazy loading
- Implement responsive images

**Benefits:**

- Faster page load times
- Better Core Web Vitals
- Improved SEO

### Content Optimization

**Strategy:**

- Optimize HTML
- Minify CSS/JS
- Implement caching
