# Content Quality Standards 2026

**Last Updated:** 2026-03-21
**Purpose:** Comprehensive content quality standards for blog posts in 2026

## Overview

This document defines content quality standards for blog posts, including word count targets, FAQ requirements, content depth, and internal linking best practices.

## User-Centric Principles

Content must solve the user's problem fully and efficiently. Extra content that doesn't add value doesn't help rankings and may harm them.

1. **Solve the problem fully** – Write the minimum amount needed to fully solve the problem. Don't pad; don't add tangential topics.
2. **Front-load answers** – Direct answer or definition in the first sentence. Inverted pyramid: key info first, then context.
3. **No fluff** – Every sentence must add unique value. Cut micro-fluff and redundant paragraphs. See [ANTI_FLUFF_CHECKLIST.md](ANTI_FLUFF_CHECKLIST.md).
4. **Scannable** – Lists, tables, short paragraphs (40–80 words). Visual break every ~300 words. Clear heading hierarchy.
5. **Match search intent** – Informational queries need comprehensive answers; transactional need conversion focus. Align depth with intent.
6. **People-first body copy** – Do not publish SEO-process narration in the article body (e.g. “Warum ein eigener Artikel…”, “Suchintention”, “Kannibalisierung”, “verlinken wir gezielt”). Keep intent and differentiation in outline/SERP artifacts; the HTML should read for HR readers. See [PEOPLE_FIRST_INTRO_AND_LINKING.md](PEOPLE_FIRST_INTRO_AND_LINKING.md).

## Word Count Standards

**⚠️ IMPORTANT:** Word count is NOT a direct ranking factor. These are flexible guidelines based on search intent, competition level, and competitor analysis. See [Flexible Word Count Guidelines](FLEXIBLE_WORD_COUNT_GUIDELINES.md) for complete decision framework.

### Flexible Word Count Targets

**Informational Content (Lexikon/Ratgeber):**
- **Low Competition (< 30):** 1,200-1,800 words
- **Medium Competition (30-50):** 1,800-2,500 words
- **High Competition (50+):** 2,500-4,000 words
- **Very High Competition (70+):** 4,000+ words (skyscraper approach)

**News/Announcements (Inside Ordio):**
- **Standard Posts:** 300-800 words
- **Comprehensive Guides:** 1,500-2,500 words

**Decision Factors:**
1. Search intent (informational, transactional, navigational)
2. Competition level (keyword difficulty)
3. Competitor content depth (average word count, topics covered)
4. Content gaps vs competitors

**See:** [Flexible Word Count Guidelines](FLEXIBLE_WORD_COUNT_GUIDELINES.md) for complete decision framework.

**Current Distribution:**
- < 800 words: 18 posts (18.2%) - Needs expansion
- 800-1,199 words: 46 posts (46.5%) - Below target
- 1,200-1,499 words: 25 posts (25.3%) - Meets target
- ≥ 1,500 words: 10 posts (10.1%) - Optimal

### Word Count Expansion Strategies

**For Posts < 800 Words:**

### Navigational Intent Content

**Requirements:**
- Clear branding
- Easy navigation
- Internal linking
- Brand mentions
- Authority signals

**Depth Indicators:**
- Brand consistency
- Internal navigation
- Related content links
- Authority building

## Internal Linking Best Practices

### Link Count Standards (Word-Count Based, 2026 Best Practices)

Link density should scale with content length. Target ~1 contextual internal link per 200-300 words.

**Formula:**
- **Minimum:** `max(3, ceil(word_count / 300))`
- **Optimal:** `ceil(word_count / 250)` (1 per ~250 words)
- **Maximum:** `min(30, ceil(word_count / 150))`

**By Word Count:**

| Word Count | Min Links | Optimal | Max |
|------------|-----------|---------|-----|
| 500 | 3 | 2-3 | 4 |
| 1,000 | 4 | 4-5 | 7 |
| 1,500 | 5 | 6 | 10 |
| 2,000 | 7 | 8 | 14 |
| 3,000 | 10 | 12 | 20 |
| 4,000+ | 14+ | 16+ | 27-30 |

**Validation:** Run `php v2/scripts/blog/audit-internal-link-density.php` to check posts against these targets.

**1:1 Links Override (Mandatory):** Word-count targets are guidance, not caps. **Always add 1:1 related links** (lexikon, template, tool, product, pillar, ratgeber) when content mentions the term—even if that exceeds the suggested max. Never skip a 1:1 link to stay within targets. Posts above max due to 1:1 links are acceptable. See `docs/data/blog-overlapping-terms.json` for terms with multiple valid targets (e.g. Stundenzettel: lexikon + template + product).

**Current Distribution:**
- 0 links: 14 posts (14.1%) - Critical gap
- 1-5 links: 34 posts (34.3%) - Below target
- 6-10 links: 35 posts (35.4%) - Meets minimum
- 11+ links: 16 posts (16.2%) - Optimal

### Link Diversity Standards

**Target Distribution:**
- **Blog Post Links:** 50-60% (5-10 links)
- **Tool Links:** 20-30% (2-5 links)
- **Template Links:** 10-15% (1-3 links)
- **Pillar Page Links:** 10-15% (1-2 links)

**For Inside Ordio Posts:**
- **Blog Post Links:** 40-50%
- **Product Page Links:** 30-40%
- **Help Center Links:** 10-20%
- **Tool Links:** 10-20%

### Link Quality Standards

**Anchor Text:**
- Descriptive and natural
- Includes relevant keywords
- Contextually appropriate
- User-friendly

**Link Placement:**
- Contextual within content
- Natural flow
- Relevant to surrounding text
- **No link dumps:** Never append "Weitere Lexikon-Artikel:" or similar phrases with a list of links at the end of a paragraph. Integrate links inline with natural anchor text that fits the sentence. The related-posts carousel handles discovery.

**Link Relevance:**
- Topically relevant
- Adds value to reader
- Supports main content
- Enhances user experience

## Content Structure Standards

### Heading Hierarchy

**Required Structure:**
- H1: Post title (one per post)
- H2: Main sections (5-10 for most posts; 8-12 for main topics per [CONTENT_DEPTH_GUIDELINES.md](CONTENT_DEPTH_GUIDELINES.md))
- H3: Subsections (as needed)
- H4: Sub-subsections (rarely needed)

**Best Practices:**
- Logical flow
- Descriptive headings
- Keyword optimization (natural)
- Clear hierarchy

### Content Sections

**Standard Structure:**
1. **Introduction** (100-200 words)
   - Context and background
   - Value proposition
   - What readers will learn

2. **Main Content** (800-1,500 words)

   - Examples and use cases
   - Best practices
   - Step-by-step guides
